why jesus?
4) The name "Jesus" and the title "Christ" are entirely Jewish in origin. They are translations of the Hebrew name Y'shua and the Hebrew title Meshiach.

Did you know that the Hebrew word meshiach -- which is where the word "Messiah" comes from -- is best translated as "anointed" in English? It means something like "commissioned." This commissioning was typically done in Biblical times by putting sacred oil on someone's head (i.e. anointing them). So meshiach (Messiah) is the Anointed One commissioned by God to bring His kingdom to us. The Greek word for meshiach or "anointed one" is kristos. So kristos -- or "Christ" as we say it in English -- is not the last name of Jesus. "Christ" is a divine title that specifically identifies Jesus as the Jewish Messiah!

Here is another bit of information for you. "Jesus" was actually not the original given name of the Jewish man who is now worshipped around the world as the Messiah of Israel. Surprised? Don't be. What kind of Jewish parents would give their first-born son a goyishe-sounding name like "Jesus?"

His real name was probably Y'shua or Y'hoshua (the Aramaic equivalent of "Joshua") -- which, interestingly enough, means "God saves." Since His adoptive father's name was Yosef (Joseph), He would have been known as Y'shua ben-Yosef during His own earthly lifetime. We use the name "Jesus" today because the New Testament was written in Greek, and "Jesus" is the English translation of Jesu (pronounced yay-zu), which is how the Greeks translated Y'shua.

Why is this important? Because "Jesus" doesn't sound very Jewish. Neither does "Christ." So when we hear someone say "Jesus Christ," it doesn't sound like they're talking about anything even remotely Jewish.

However, this unfortunate result of translation and re-translation can be easily remedied. Just try saying "Y'shua ha-Meshiach" out loud. Make sure you make a very strong throat-clearing sound on the final "ch" like you're choking on a fish-bone. There. Doesn't that sound a lot more like a good name for a Jewish rabbi living and teaching in Israel at the start of the first century A.D.?

The entirely Jewish name Y'shua ha-Meshiach is the real name of the person that in English we call "Jesus Christ." And He was a great rabbi. In fact, He was the greatest rabbi who ever lived. He is also the Son of God -- another concept that you can easily find in the Jewish scriptures (as noted before in Proverbs 30:4). To think of Jesus -- Y'shua -- as anything but Jewish is like saying that gefilte fish was invented by a French chef. It simply isn't true.
