Many people wonder why we believe it is so important for people to know Jesus. "Why do I have to believe what you believe?" they ask. "Can't I just be a good person and believe in God without being a Christian?"
There isn't enough space here to answer all the questions people have about Jesus, but here are a few ideas to consider.
First, closeness with God isn't something you earn by being "good enough." How good would "good enough" be, anyway? How many good things would you have to do to qualify? How many people could you hurt and still make the grade? If you started your life doing really bad things, how many good things would you have to do to make up for them? Once you start down the road of "good enough," you end up with more questions than you started with!
No one can be "good enough" to earn eternal life with God. All of us have done wrong. So God made a simple way for us to have all of our sins removed from our life-record. He had Jesus -- who was Himself without sin --pay the penalty for them. All we do is accept this freely given gift. That way, nobody can brag about being "good enough" for God. God Himself provides the means for us to be His.
Second, it really doesn't make sense to think we score points with God for believing in Him. Assume for a moment that the Devil actually exists. Do you think he believes in God? Of course he does! He tries to thwart God's purposes all the time. But does merely "believing" in God's existence entitle him to anything? Obviously not. So simply believing in God is clearly not enough.
But maybe the best way to answer the question "Why Jesus?" is with another question: "Why not Jesus?" Why reject such a wonderful gift? You may not like Christians. You may disagree with some things you've been told the Bible teaches. You may not like the churches you've attended. But Jesus is absolutely awesome. He offers nothing but truth, life, and fulfillment. So give Him a shot!
And stop by RBCC. You might find out that church and Christians aren't so bad after all!
